海角社区 in S茫o Paulo

We have been in the interior of S茫o Paulo since 1955, when we arrived in 海角社区, the town we named ourselves after. In the state, we also have sites in Jacare铆 (1958), Limeira (1959), Rio Verde (1960) and Mogi das Cruzes (acquisition completed in 2023).

In addition to the plants that produce paper and pulp that are used in everyday products such as books, packaging, toilet paper and consumer goods, we have eucalyptus farms and native forest conservation areas in more than 110 locations in S茫o Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. Our S茫o Paulo operations employ a team of approximately 10,000 people, including company employees and contractors.

Somos a 海角社区

We conserve and monitor biodiversity in S茫o Paulo, tracking endemic species that live in certain geographic regions and are threatened with extinction.

01.

Conservation of Endangered Primates

In partnership with the Federal University of Vi莽osa (UFV), we monitor southern muriquis (Brachyteles arachnoides), a native species from the Atlantic Forest. Southern muriquis, the largest primates in the Americas, are known as 鈥渇orest gardeners鈥 for helping spread plant seeds. There are currently only 20 populations of this species in Brazil, and we monitor and help conserve the ones found in some of our conservation areas.

02.

Bird Survey

An endangered species, the marsh antwren (Formicivora paludicola) is found in very few towns in S茫o Paulo. The bird was one of the most extraordinary discoveries in Brazilian ornithology this century. In partnership with the Society for the Conservation of Birds of Brazil (Save Brasil), we monitor birds of this species that live in our conservation areas.

03.

High Conservation Value Areas

In our S茫o Paulo Forestry Business Unit (UNF-SP), we have 23 High Conservation Value Areas (HCVAs) that are extremely important for biodiversity鈥攕o much so that ten of them are considered exceptional locations. In total, they have more than 10,600 hectares of preserved native vegetation.

04.

Planos da Mata (鈥淧lans for the Forest鈥)

Carried out by the SOS Mata Atl芒ntica Foundation with our support, this project aims to structure local governance, in a participatory manner, to enable the creation of Municipal Plans for the Conservation and Recovery of the Atlantic Forest (PMMA, in Portuguese) in 33 Brazilian locations (14 of them in S茫o Paulo) where we operate.

Social Projects Supported in S茫o Paulo

Check out some of the social initiatives we develop in the state:

海角社区 Crafts

Since 2017, we have supported programs for people who make a living from crafts in Vale do Para铆ba, including: M茫os que Valem (鈥淰aluable Hands鈥), which benefits residents of the S茫o Silvestre district, in Jacare铆, who work with activities such as embroidery, crochet, fabric painting, creative sewing and handmade stationery; and Vargem do Tanque Pottery, which supports the production of primitive ceramic pieces, showcasing the rustic art developed in the town that gives its name to the program and generating income for local artisans.

Vale Contratar no Vale (鈥淚t鈥檚 Worth Hiring in the Valley鈥)

The program focuses on training and establishing connections for people living in poverty to be hired by 海角社区 or contractors in the Vale do Para铆ba region. In 2022, the initiative helped lift 300 people out of poverty.

Semente (鈥淪eed鈥) Project

In partnership with SEBRAE, we implement the Semente (鈥淪eed鈥) Project, which supports the social development of the Alto Tiet锚 and Vale do Para铆ba regions by providing free mentoring and training to include people in vulnerable situations in the job market. The project has reached 2,000 participants so far.

Inclusive Recycling

Alongside the Cap茫o Bonito Recyclable Material Collectors Cooperative (ACAMAR, in Portuguese), we implemented an Environmental Education Center at the association鈥檚 headquarters, located in the Vila Santa Isabel community, to educate the population about recycling and increase the collection of recyclable waste in the region. More than 120 people have been lifted out of poverty by the program, which has already benefited 56 families.

Colmeias (鈥淏eehives鈥) S茫o Paulo

It was in the interior of S茫o Paulo, in 2004, that we installed the first apiaries within our company farms, starting the Colmeias (鈥淏eehives鈥) Program, which supports the sustainable production of honey in our eucalyptus farms.

The initiative encourages the development of Local Production Arrangements (LPA), bringing together partners for the production and sale of beekeeping products and to strengthen the production chain in the Alto Tiet锚, Polo Cuesta and Vale do Para铆ba regions. We currently benefit 17 associations in S茫o Paulo.
